Our subscale prototype was specifically designed to validate the WindKing Advanced Pitch Control Technology for regulating the power extracted from the wind and its gusts. We designed and built an oversized blade system with a very low Polar Moment of Inertia so that it would respond very quickly to wind gusts. We then connected it to an undersized fixed RPM squirrel cage induction generator. If the Advanced Pitch Control Technology did not work, the generator would have burned up in a matter of minutes.
Even under the most severe wind gusts, when power passing through the blades increased by factors of 30-50 in just a few seconds, power was regulated well within 1.20 times the rated power for the generator and thereby within the 1.25 allowable service factor.
